The Many Benefits of Green Tea

There are many health benefits of green tea. Hundreds of interesting studies done throughout the years reveal that drinking green tea can play an important role in your life.

Remember! To obtain the most benefits and flavor from green tea, brew it from the whole loose leaves instead of from the tea bag. It’ll make a world of difference.

Green tea and cancer prevention

This is probably the most common of reports. How green tea is living up to be a powerful agent against cancer. A large percentage of green tea research to date has focused on cancer prevention.

An article posted on Celestial Seasonings state out of the hundreds of tests that have been conducted with green tea, roughly ten percent involved humans. The majority of the studies that were done on animals and test tubes should not be ignored however since they may offer insight for future human studies.

Let's see some of these studies...and remember...the following information should not be taken as an actual preventative or cure for any of the discussed health issues or otherwise.

cup of green tea

Like it's more powerful younger brother white tea, the benefits of green tea can help aid in the fight against certain types of cancer, such as colon, prostate, stomach, bladder, pancreas, lung, and esophageal.

  • A report in a 1996 issue of Fundamental Applied & Toxicology revealed that mice intentionally bred to develop lung tumors were in fact protected from the formation of lung cancer by having green tea in their diet. The mice that did not have green tea developed the tumors.

  • In a 1994 study from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute we learn that green tea can help prevent esophageal cancer. The study showed that women who consumed green tea were more protected from this cancer than women who did not consume the tea.

The more tea the women drank, the less at risk they were to develop the cancer.

  • A report in 1990 shows that drinking green tea daily can help lower the risk of colon and rectal cancers. More studies done in 1997 provide evidence that green tea can also help prevent colorectal cancer. In the study, 931 patients who were diagnosed with colon cancer later revealed that the more green tea they drank, the less likely they were to further develop the cancer.

  • In 1996 at the Indiana University School of Medicine researches found that the benefits of green tea may help prevent the growth of liver tumors.

  • A 1990 Japanese study suggests that people who drink green along with a diet of raw vegetables decrease the risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Mom always said to eat your veggies...now researches have provided a better reason :)

  • More benefits of green tea revealed in a 1996 issue of Cancer magazine show us that consuming green tea can help reduce the risk of awful stomach cancer!

The thought of stomach cancer scares me the most! I have a sensitive stomach as it is (tea never bothers it), and wouldn't want that ailment at all!

  • More potential good news about green tea was discovered in 1998 from the scientists at the Mayo Clinic revealing that a component in this tea called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) destroys cancer cells known to cause prostate cancer.

  • Green tea can help protect your heart!

Benefits of green tea go beyond just cancer, and having 3 cups a day may help reduce the risk of a heart attack.

Research from both animal and human studies suggest that drinking green tea can lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and reduce the risk of dying from heart disease.

This long 25 year study suggests that people who drink 8.5 ounces (normal mug size) of tea a day had a lower rate of first-time heart attacks, as well as a reduced risk from dying from them compared to people who drank less tea.

Furthermore, men who drank the most tea in this study had one third the risk of dying from coronary heart disease. Let's see Cheerios cereal do that!

In another study, researches discovered that the antioxidants found in green tea help prevented blood clotting. Blood clotting can lead to a number of problems such as heart attack and stroke! It's nice to know green tea helps abate that.

    More good news for women

A report from the International Journal of Cancer, researches discovered that women who drink at least one cup of green tea a day for a period of six months cut the risk of bile stones by 27 percent. They also lowered the risk of gallbladder cancer by 44 percent, and the risk of bile duct cancer by 35 percent.

In this report led by Dr. Ann W. Hsing, she explains the chemicals in green tea stop cells from growing abnormally; which is the way cancer is born.

The benefits of green tea and arthritis

Scientists from Case Western University revealed that antioxidants in green tea postponed as well as decreased a type of arthritis in mice. This suggests that green tea has anti-inflammatory and possible arthritis preventing effects.

Other related findings in Europe teaches that the antioxidants present in green tea decreased the movement of blood cells that cause inflammation across blood vessel walls. These benefits of green tea do shed some light on future research and future arthritis treatments.

    Helps protect the liver

Some scientists believe the benefits of green tea can help protect your liver. It does this in two ways: by protecting liver cells, and by triggering the immune system.

The wonderful antioxidants in green tea have shown they can also protect the liver from toxins found in cigarettes and alcohol too!

Although research and scientific information about green tea and how it benefits the liver is limited, future findings look promising.

Believe it or not...it helps fight cavities!

More benefits of green extend to fighting tooth decay and cavities. Did you know that green tea contains fluoride? This was a new one for me too, even now as I right this, but recent findings are backing up ancient claims showing that this tea type can help promote oral health.

The antibacterial properties in green tea work against the bacteria that can cause those annoying cavities!

Think about it, if a cup or so a day can avoid you a trip to the dentist would you consider drinking it? An apple may keep the doctor away, but green tea keeps the dentists at bay.

    Future and past...

More and more studies come out each week promoting the benefits of green tea. There are also many numerous studies previously done that are not mentioned on this page revealing these benefits.

It would certainly be a long read if I put them all here…and finding all of them would certainly be a challenge!

Once again…it is recommended that you brew loose leaf tea instead of tea bags to obtain the most benefits of green tea or any other type.
