Herbal Tea Nutrients

By Diane Van Doesburg, Herbalist

Herbal tea nutrients - just like vitamins in a tea cup!

I enjoy a cup of tea, no doubt about it! Even more so I enjoy vitamins in a tea cup! What exactly are vitamins in a tea cup? This is my name for a herbal tea, or an infusion if you will, that contains nutritive herbs steepedfor a longer length of time.

These herbs are actually true foods. They can be considered herbal tea remedies but most importantly they provide vitamins and minerals necessary for good health. So many of these nutrients we are deficient in thanks to our modern diet and lifestyle.

Many of our illnesses can be attributed to nutrient deficiencies but a good supply of nutrients may give the body the necessary tools to heal itself. Drinking these herbal tea nutrients daily may provide the necessary nutrients our bodies are lacking in.

To get all the herbal tea benefits of these herbs make an infusion:
  • Measure out 1/3 cup dry herbs into 1 quart tea pot or infuser.
  • Add 4 cups boiling water and cover.
  • Let steep 4 - 8 hours
  • Strain and drink your nutrients throughout the day!
4-8 hours is a long time, I know! However, this length of time is needed to pull the nutrients of the herb into the herbal tea. These herbal tea nutrients are bioavailable, meaning our bodies can easily absorb and use them.

Below are my favorite herbs for herbal teas. As well, you'll find some general facts about tea remedies.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa): Considered animal feed for centuries alfalfa can feed my tea cup any day! Alfalfa is a great detoxifier of the blood and is used often in arthritis formulas, to reduce cholesterol and as a bitter tonic. Caution: Alfalfa interferes with blood thinners.
Alfalfa Tea nutrients:
  • Cholorophyllins
  • Riboflavin
  • Crude fiber
  • Beta carotene

Horsetail (Equisetum arvense): Horsetail is an actual herb not the long flowing tail of Black Beauty! The Native Americans have used this herb to make mats and polish woodwork. Medicinally it has been usedfor urinary tract infections and as a diuretic. I like using horsetail along with one or more of these other herbs listed.
Horsetail Tea nutrients:

  • Silicon
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Chromium
  • Iron
  • Potassium
Oatstraw (Avena sativa): Oatstraw is the above ground part of the oat plant left after the grain has been harvested. This herb is wonderful for chronic stress and anxiety and female menstruation problems. It is useful for hair, skin and nails too!

Oatstraw Tea nutrients:

  • Magnesium
  • Chromium
  • Silicon

Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus): Red raspberry leaf is reknowned as a female tonic as it helps regulate the menstrual cycle. It also tones the uterusin preparation for childbirth.
Raspberry Leaf Tea nutrients:

  • Magnesium
  • Niacin
  • Manganese
Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica): Many of us have encountered this herb while walking through the woods. However, stinging nettle is a nutritional powerhouse if you can look past its nasty barbs. One of its nutrients, zinc, has claims of being famous as a restorer of sexual potency in men. It is also used in cancer prevention formulas.

Nettle Tea nutrients:

  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc

These 5 herbs are part of my daily vitamin and mineral regime. So, why not pull out your tea pot and try some of these vitamins in a tea cup!
