Tea and Crumpets is a common "tea term", and is probably the first thing folks envision when they think about a tea food.
This light meal is mainly consumed in the United Kingdom, and is much less common in the United States, where tea and toast, tea with muffins, scones, or donuts are more popular.
A crumpet is a relative of the pancake, is round in shape, and about the size of an English Muffin.
However, a crumpet differs from the English Muffin since it is cooked on only one side instead of both sides.
Tea and crumpets are both served hot, the tea usually a black type of tea with either milk, honey, sugar, or lemon, and the crumpets topped with either butter or jam. Other toppings may also include cheese, peanut butter, marmalade, or syrup.
In Scotland, the crumpet, which may also be made into a Scotch Pancake since they share the same ingredients, can vary in size and also have fruits and raisins in the mix. If made into the pancake, they are usually more flat and have a more flexible texture.
Unlike the normal pancake, where they are cooked well on both sides, the Scotch Pancake is cooked on one side until it is a golden brown, then lightly cooked on the other.
After eating tea and crumpets, one may find themselves to go for hours before needing a full meal, which makes this tea food the perfect type of afternoon tea time snack.
